CANSI XC Level I
This is a three-day course for those new to XC ski instruction. It will give you the skills and resources to teach classic and skate technique to beginner skiers using CANSI’s teaching methodology with a focus on safety and skill progression.

- To become a certified XC ski instructor and to learn CANSI’s approach for teaching classic and skate technique to beginner skiers;
- To develop the skills and resources to teach professionally, or to help friends and family on the trails.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course you will:
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic safety considerations, e.g., skier traffic and terrain as well as environmental issues such as temperature, weather and snow conditions.
- Be able to explain and apply the skier responsibility code for the location of the course.
- Demonstrate basic communication with students using words, guided questions, diagrams, gestures and demonstrations at the correct level for a beginner skier.
- Be able to use the five-question approach to connect with students and apply this knowledge in the lesson.
- Demonstrate a professional manner, following CANSI’s code of conduct to create a positive learning environment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of troubleshooting for beginners regarding ski equipment and clothing.
- Balance time in a lesson between talking activities and skiing activities.
- Demonstrate basic propulsion, coordination, balance and direction change while performing the following skiing manoeuvres on green terrain suitable for the level of a beginner skier: diagonal stride, double pole, one skate, herringbone, diagonal skate and wedge turns.
- Be able to explain and identify the basic elements of propulsion, coordination, balance and direction change at a level for beginner skiers.
- Demonstrate with students the principles of task design, effective demonstration, practice time and reflection of task.
- Be able to identify specific areas for improvement, create improvement tasks and provide effective feedback to students, both individually and collectively.
- Be able to demonstrate an introductory progression for each manoeuvre.
Prerequisites:
- You must be at least 15 years old at the start of the course.
- You should be able to demonstrate the required skiing skills on green terrain.
