Happy Winter Solstice, today is the shortest day of the year! In pre-Christian northern Europe, December 21 was the first day of Yule. It is this celebration that brought us most of the things we associate with Christmas. 12-day advent, decorating a tree, wreaths, holly and possibly Santa Claus, a representation of the god Odin. In fact In the late 900’s Yule was brought into alignment with Christianity as had Saturnalia, a southern European, Pagan festival at the same time of year. Saturnalia brought the gift giving aspect to Christmas.
