Wednesday, January 19, 2022

Good morning skiers,

Conditions at our club are -5c with no fresh snow overnight. A mix of sun and clouds through the day with it becoming cloudy at the end of the day and about 5cm of fresh snow overnight.

Grooming is nearly complete, with Clearwater and its Loops finished as well as Busk/Euphrates also complete including the Connector. On the Apex side the Rail grade, Cottonwood and Night creek are complete with only the Night Loop remaining.

The recent eruption of the Hunga Tonga volcano in the South Pacific, may or may not have global impacts, but volcanic eruptions have had deep and lasting impacts on human history. The 1315 Europe wide famine was brought on by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in New Zealand. This may also have caused the black death 25 year later to have been more severe, due to damaged immune systems in children who were developing during the famine. The eruption of Lakagigar in Iceland in 1783, and the subsequent years of failed crops and higher bread price may have brought on the French Revolution, and the Eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia brought on the year without summer in 1816, causing starvation and eventual Typhus outbreaks in Europe. It also inspired many dark works of art and literature such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. We will see what impacts Hunga Tonga will have on our lives and on the ripples of history.
